Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

What is an Employee
Assistance Programme? (EAP)

An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a voluntary, work-based program that offers free and confidential assessments, short-term counselling, referrals, and follow-up services to employees who have personal and/or work-related problems. EAPs address a broad and complex range of issues affecting mental and emotional well-being, such as alcohol and other substance abuse, stress, grief, family problems, and psychological disorders. EAP counsellors also work in a consultative role with managers and supervisors to address employee and organizational challenges and needs. Many EAPs are active in helping organizations prevent and cope with workplace violence, trauma, and other emergency response situations.

EAPs have now become important more than ever because the COVID pandemic has been incredibly challenging for everyone – employees and employers alike. Like many other companies and businesses, you’re probably experiencing significant challenges because of the pandemic. During times like these, feelings of distress and anxiety among employees are more apparent than ever. Studies have shown that 1 in 5 employees are suffering from mental health issues at any one time and recent increases in financial insecurity, social isolation, and loneliness because of COVID-19 will likely see this number rise.

As an employer in a time of such uncertainty, it can be difficult to know how you can support your employees. With so many questions unanswered and the current environment changing daily, it’s never been a more critical time to provide support for your team. The last thing you want during this time is to have your employees suffering in silence and feeling like there is no support available. Rapport Counselling is available to provide professional counselling services, support and referral when they need. This will have a direct impact on employee productivity and retention of your very talented staff.

As part of the employee assistance programme, we are able to offer the following services:

• Free 24/7 counselling, legal and information line
• Critical incident advice and telephone support
• Online health and wellness assessment
• Relationship management support and usage
• Management support line and counselling
• Manager support guides

Assistance programmes come at no cost to employees and they may be delivered via Phone, Video or Online interactions. They may also include face to face session. By offering and Employee Assistance Programs, employers can help employees to counter any problems they may be experiencing. When you can help to support your employees when they are going through poor physical issues with emotional wellbeing you get a happier, healthier workforce who feel valued and supported by their employer.

How do Employee Assistance Programmes work?

Through an EAP, employees have confidential access to counsellors and resource. While employers pay for this service, they receive no information into what is discussed during the sessions, or how the employee is using the service. This means that an employee can feel comfortable to discuss all issues and receive support on the matters affecting them most.

Within the first session of the assistance programme, the employees will receive an initial assessment, to see how they are currently feeling and what their current situation is.

Employees can receive help in the following areas;

  • Mental Health issues (including stress, depression and anxiety or any issues relating to mental health that the employee wants to discuss.
  • Financial issues (including how to deal with debts, help creating budgets, investments and managing loans
  • Legal advice including marriage counseling, advise and support surrounding divorce or family concerns)
  • Work issues/conflicts (Advice on how to deal with issues such as manager- employee conflict, burnouts, lack of interpersonal skills e. t. c)
  • Drug Addiction (including advice on addiction or how to deal with issues a family members problem with addiction.

Note: But all the programs are not limited to these topics and can cover much more.
